In 1993, while many houses were preparing for the transition to 32-bit, Nintendo chose instead to go directly to 64-bit and so, after three years of development, the Ultra 64 was born, then changed to Nintendo 64, as Konami made use of this term for the Ultra Games division. [citation needed] Nintendo's choice to use the cartridge system for this console too, justified by the desire to ward off computer piracy, was the subject of some criticism from all those who awaited a futuristic product like the rival PlayStation; in fact, the PlayStation could also play music CDs in addition to games, thus offering multifaceted entertainment that particularly impressed consumers. Furthermore, the low cost of producing CD-ROMs allowed Sony to re-sell off-peak games at reduced prices, which Nintendo could not do due to the high manufacturing price of the cartridges.

The Nintendo 64 actually marked a real revolution in the field of video games, offering the first true three-dimensional gaming experience with high quality titles and still authentic milestones of their genre, and had positive feedback all over the world, exceeding the share of 30 million units sold. However, in the last few years of sale it was overtaken by the rival PlayStation, which set a record by selling over 70 million units, but with results far superior to those of the Sega Saturn whose sales reached only 9 million units. Application development for the Nintendo 64 ended on April 30, 2002.
