Sitting on the bench at a bus stop in Savannah, Forrest Gump remembers his childhood as a child with mental and physical problems. Only mom accepts it for what it is, and only little Jenny Curran makes him sit next to him on the school bus. It will be she who incites him, to escape to three violent companions, to run, thus freeing her legs from the prosthesis. Through thirty years of American history seen through the eyes of simplicity and innocence, Forrest becomes a university football champion, while he is increasingly in love with Jenny who, however, considers him a brother. Attends racial unrest in Alabama and meets Kennedy shortly before the assassination. He then enlisted in the army, where he befriended the black Bubba, a shrimp fisherman who communicated his passion to him. After a fleeting encounter with Jenny singing in Memphis, Gump goes to fight in Vietnam. Here Bubba dies and he rescues several comrades, including his commander, Dan Taylor. Back home, he learns the art of ping-pong, is decorated by Johnson and meets Jenny at a pacifist demonstration who disappears again. Finding himself a ping-pong champion, he participates in the historic tour in China, and meets Nixon shortly before Watergate. Bought a boat, he goes fishing for prawns with Taylor, and makes his fortune. After the death of his billionaire mother, he is joined by Jenny, who refuses to marry him but has a sexual relationship with him to disappear again. Desperate Forrest runs on foot for America for three years, also gathering followers. Then Jenny calls him from Savannah, where he informs him that he has a son, Forrest junior. Back in Alabama, the two marry, but Jenny, AIDS patient dies lovingly assisted by her husband, who will dedicate himself to his son.
