Description
In 1863, during the Secession war, the Northern Cavalry Lieutenant John Dumbar, for having performed a heroic action, receives the Sisko horse and the authorization to go to Fort Sedgewick, the last outpost on the Indian border and reaches him with the carter, who brings you supplies. But the two find the fort abandoned, while the skeletons of the defenders lie around. While the carter returns immediately (and will be massacred by the cruel Pawnee Indians), Dumbar, impressed by the splendid unspoiled landscapes, tidies up the huts of the fort, hides supplies and weapons and waits in vain for the arrival of troops. After a few confrontations with the Pawnee, who try to steal Sisko from him, and after making friends with a lone wolf, John meets the first Sioux: Rocking Bird, religious leader of the nearby village, Vento nel Capelli, brave warrior, and, later, also the old Big Boss Ten Bears, who soon become his friends. In the tribe there is a white woman. Christine, nicknamed Alzata con Pugno, who was raised by the Indians and now serves as an interpreter between them and Dumbar. When a large herd of bison is sighted, John participates in the lucky hunt, which guarantees food and clothing for the winter to the Sioux, who, soon attacked by Pawnee warriors, defeat them with rifles, which John kept at the fort. Seeing Dumbar play around the fire with the lone wolf, his Indian friends nickname him "Dance with the wolves". In the meantime, John and Alzata con Pugno love each other, so Uccello Scalciante, declared her mourning over the death of her first husband, unites them in marriage, and the two live happily with the tribe. Unfortunately, however, John understands that first the soldiers and then the colonists will soon invade the Sioux territory .......
